In the process, Warm White Night (Western Winter x Thousand Nights x Foveros) predictably maintained his unbeaten record. While the winning margin was less than when he won the Gr 3 Protea Stakes on debut and the Gr 2 South African Nursery in-between, the outcome stamped Warm White Night as a superior 2 year old, with an abundance of talent. Interestingly, Cerise Cherry and Secret Life have finished 2nd and 3rd respectively behind Warm White Night on the three occasions that the trio has met. Warm White Night is owned by Ingrid and Markus Jooste and trained by Charles Laird. The merit of their colt’s performance is put into perspective by comparing his winning time of 67.78 seconds with the times recorded by another 49 horses of all ages who contested 4 Gr 1 events run over the same 1200 metres at the same venue on the same day. Warm White Night clocked the third fastest time of the day, 0.78 seconds outside the course record. As a two year old carrying 57 kgs, it was a brilliant performance. The fastest time was posted by the older filly Rat Burana, who carrying 56.5 kgs, clocked 67.5 seconds, the equivalent of 1.4 lengths faster. The second fastest time of 67.62 seconds was recorded by JJ The Jet Plane, a multiple Gr 1 winner, now destined to take on the very best international sprinters in Hong Kong later in the year. Had Warm White Night run against the 2 year old fillies, he would have beaten them more than 5 lengths! Had he run against older company in the SA Fillies Sprint or Golden Horse Casino Sprint, he would have finished second on both counts. His true brilliance becomes evident after factoring in the Weight-for-Age scale that has stood the test of time. At this time of the year, Warm White Night would be receiving 8 kgs from 3 year olds and 9.5 kgs from 4 year olds and older. Adjusting actual times for Weight-for-Age, Warm White Night gives every of the other 49 Gr 1 runners a decisive beating. Warm White Night was purchased for R 1.8 million at the 2007 South African National Yearling Sales by Charles Laird for his patrons. His sire, Western Winter, a son of Gone West, has been 4 times Champion Sire of South Africa. His dam, Thousand Nights, won 8 races from 1000 – 1700 metres, under the care of Gary Alexander. She is also the dam of Night Watch (by Badger Land), twice winner of the Gr 1 Gold Cup over 3200 metres. Seventh Rock (Rock of Gibraltar x Ruby Clipper x Rubiton) is presently in quarantine in South Africa en route to Australia via England. He will be reunited with Charles Laird in September when he arrives at his Flemington stables, in preparation for an Autumn campaign. Seventh Rock is the only one to have lowered the winning colours of dual Gr 1 winner Argonaut (Western Winter x Aquasarto x Del Sarto), the South African bred, attractive chestnut colt who similarly has made Victoria his home.
