Lionel (picture above courtesy blog.summerhill.co.za) relocated to Australia with his wife Caroline and their two children. Having been a successful entrepreneur in South Africa in several facets of the thoroughbred and bloodstock industries, including breeding, racehorse ownership, transport and auction sales, Lionel has always wanted to train horses. He was licensed to operate from stables at Rosehill Gardens in August 2010, after having spent a short period of tutelage with David Payne.
Lionel had previously owned Odessa Stud in South Africa, consistently one of the leading breeding operations spanning three generations. Odessa Stud became synonymous with sound, high class equine athletes that had gone on to win nearly every major race in South Africa. Lionel’s astute judgment and knowledge of thoroughbreds led him to purchase the mare Elfenjer, in foal at the time carrying Sun Classique. Lionel retained and raced Sun Classique who went on to become one of the top race fillies in the world when she won the 2008 Dubai Sheema Classic, carrying Lionel’s famous brown and white silks. Having turned his hand to training racehorses, Liquid Force, having his second start and also sporting the brown and white silks, provided Lionel with his first winner as a trainer by winning the $14,000 Maiden Handicap for 3 year olds at Kembla Grange on 23 October 2010. The son of Danzero out of the mare Ile De Beaute (JPN), Liquid Force (seen below as a yearling), was purchased at the 2009 Magic Millions Yearling Sales.
